Are You Tired and Stiff in the Morning?

Are you ready for a great night’s sleep and a good start to your morning?

Are you tired of waking up exhausted and sore every morning? Is it painful or difficult to even get out of your bed? Do you dread getting up?

There are solutions to this dilemma, and this month we’re going to explore the most common reasons that help to create this situation.

How Old Is Your Mattress?

That’s the first question I ask my patients when they complain of a slow, painful start in the morning. Is your bed at least seven years old? Ten years old or older? Most mattress manufacturers recommend replacement about every seven years.

If you’re noticing that you toss and turn more frequently as well, it may be time for a new bed. Take a look at the article that’s posted on this website about choosing an ideal mattress. I think you’ll find it helpful.

Sleep Position Is Critical

If you’re a stomach sleeper, that may be contributing to your pain and stiffness in the morning. Switch to side sleeping or lying on your back and you may see a noticeable difference in the levels of soreness you experience.

Another good tactic is to sleep with a body pillow. Place this either between your knees while lying on your side, or behind your back for support. These pillows are often a lifesaver and can be purchased at any bedding store.

Still Having Discomfort?

If you purchased a new bed and changed your sleeping position and are still achy and sore when you get out of bed, you’d benefit greatly from a chiropractic evaluation. Underlying problems that can contribute to morning stiffness are

  • Imbalance in the muscles
  • Misaligned spinal vertebrae
  • Osteoarthritis
